Marine Fitter/Engineer
Marine Fitter / Marine Engineer ⚓
Gosport | Full-Time, Permanent | £44,884 per annum + Overtime & Benefits
Like getting stuck in, fixing things properly and being part of a close-knit team?
This could be the role for you!
SLR Recruitment are working with Gosport Ferry to find a hands-on Marine Fitter / Marine Engineer to join their small, dedicated engineering team.
With 144 crossings every day, Gosport Ferry relies on its engineering team to keep everything running safely and reliably. Looking after three ferries, two passenger piers and several shore-based properties, there’s plenty of variety to keep you busy.
This is a business that takes pride in doing the job right, first time. Offering long-term stability, a permanent position and the opportunity to develop your skills, it’s a great opportunity for an engineer looking to put down roots and build a lasting career.
The best bit? You don’t have to come from a marine background!
If you’ve got solid mechanical engineering experience in heavy goods vehicles, commercial vehicles or a similar environment, Gosport Ferry is happy to consider your transferable skills and provide training.
The Role
Working from the Gosport Ferry maintenance workshop, you’ll play an important part in keeping the fleet and facilities in top condition.
Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:
- Inspecting the fleet, identifying defects and reporting issues.
- Carrying out general fitting, mechanical repairs and maintenance.
- Fault-finding and resolving mechanical issues.
- Supporting planned maintenance, engine overhauls, dry dockings and vessel refits.
- Helping maintain the reliability and safe operation of the ferries and shore facilities.
- Taking part in the Duty Fitter rota, including standby and responding to breakdowns when required.
There may also be opportunities to support summer excursions as an onboard engineer.
What We’re Looking For:
We’re open to different backgrounds, so don’t rule yourself out if you haven’t worked on ferries before!
Ideally, you’ll have:
- Experience in marine engineering, HGV/PSV or commercial vehicle maintenance, or a similar mechanical engineering environment.
- Strong practical fitting, servicing, repair and fault-finding skills.
- A hands-on, can-do attitude and pride in producing quality work.
- A full UK driving licence with no more than six points.
- The right to work in the UK.
- ENG1 seafarer medical and STCW Basic Safety Training.
- Relevant engineering qualifications, ideally marine engineering, heavy commercial vehicle qualifications or, as a minimum, AEC 1 & 2.
Experience with marine engines, propulsion systems, electrical installations, welding or fabrication would be beneficial.
The business is also planning to take on an apprentice engineer next September, so experience of mentoring an apprentice or having completed an apprenticeship yourself would be a real advantage.
What’s on Offer?
- £44,884 per annum for 38 hours per week.
- Overtime: Time and a half outside core hours and double time between midnight and 07:30, subject to agreement.
- Standby allowance: £42.24 per 24-hour watch.
- Call-out payment: £90.80, covering the first four hours of attendance.
- Tool allowance: £80 per year towards your personal toolkit, with unused allowance carried over for up to two years.
- Pension and life insurance.
- Monthly contribution towards gym membership.
- Bike to Work scheme via salary sacrifice.
- Company-supplied specialist tooling.
- A varied role within a small, supportive team.
- Long-term stability and the opportunity to build a lasting career with an established ferry operator.
- Monday: 07:30-16:00
- Tuesday-Friday: 07:30-15:30
The role is based at Gosport Ferry’s maintenance workshop in Gosport, PO12 1AJ.
Ready for Your Next Move?
If you’re a practical engineer who enjoys variety, takes pride in doing a job properly and wants a stable, long-term role within a close-knit team, we’d love to hear from you.
Marine experience isn’t essential.. the right engineering skills and attitude could be what matters most!
