Multi-Skilled Operative – Carpentry & Plumbing

Location: Portsmouth

Hours: 40 per week

Salary: £36,206.64

We’re looking for a skilled and reliable Multi-Skilled Operative to join our Portsmouth City Council maintenance team. You’ll handle a variety of carpentry and plumbing jobs across our property portfolio—including social housing, schools, offices, museums and more.
 
This role covers both responsive and routine repairs, as well as void refurbishments. You’ll be expected to deliver top-quality work, whether it’s fitting doors, installing kitchens, fixing leaks, replacing sanitary ware, tiling or carrying out basic asbestos removal (training provided).
 
What we need from you:

• 2–5 years’ experience in social housing or building maintenance
• NVQ Level 2-3 in carpentry or plumbing (or equivalent experience)
• A solid understanding of building materials and safety practices
• Good customer service, a positive attitude, and ability to work both independently and as part of a team
• Confidence using a PDA/phone to log jobs and communicate with the ops team

You’ll be responsible for:

• Completing repairs safely and efficiently—ideally in one visit
• Keeping tenants informed and their homes clean and tidy
• Following health and safety rules at all times
• Keeping your van well-stocked and organised
• Working to our “Integrity, built-in” ethos

You’ll need to be practical, professional, and problem-solving by nature—with a real focus on doing the job right first time.
