Job Title: Prototype Wiring Technician
Location: Fareham
Contract Type: Temporary to Permanent (first 6 months contract then if happy, client will offer a permanent role).
Salary/Rate: £14 – £16ph (depending on experience)
Hours: Mon – Fri (7- 4.30 with a half hour unpaid lunchbreak) 40 hours per week but times can be flexible
 
Role Overview
The Prototype Wiring Technician will be responsible for assembling and wiring prototype electronic systems, harnesses, and control panels from detailed engineering documentation. This position requires precision, technical understanding, and the ability to work closely with engineers during the prototype development process.
 
Key Responsibilities
  • Assemble and wire prototype electrical systems, harnesses, and control panels from engineering drawings, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and mechanical layout drawings.
  • Build, route, and terminate wire harnesses and cable assemblies to specification.
  • Solder components and connectors on circuit boards or wiring assemblies (including through-hole and SMT where required).
  • Identify and troubleshoot wiring or assembly issues and collaborate with engineers to resolve them.
  • Perform continuity checks, insulation resistance tests, and other basic electrical inspections.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of build processes, modifications, and test results.
  • Handle and manage ESD-sensitive components according to best practice.
  • Ensure assemblies meet safety, reliability, and quality standards.
Skills, Experience & Qualifications
Essential:
  • 2+ years’ experience in wiring, electrical assembly, or a similar technical role.
  • Competent with hand tools such as crimpers, wire strippers, soldering irons, and multimeters.
  • Confident reading and working from electrical schematics and layout drawings.
  • Excellent attention to detail and manual dexterity.
  • Knowledge of ESD-safe practices.
Desirable:
  • Technical qualification in electronics or electrical engineering.
  • IPC/WHMA-A-620 or IPC J-STD-001 certification.
  • Previous experience in an R&D or prototype environment.
  • Background in aerospace, automotive, robotics, or industrial control systems
